What is Downsizing?

What is Downsizing?

Should I or

We had a couple called Bob and Jan who are the perfect couple we shall use in this example of downsizing.

Bob and Jan had moved at least four times in their lifetime, each time moving to a larger home to fit their busy lifestyle changes and watch their family grow.

In the last 10 – 15 years they lived in their beautiful family home, seen out many birthdays, threw children’s birthdays parties, hosted large family gatherings, seen their own children extend their own families and now it is just the two of them.

Their son and daughters have now flown the nest and began their own journeys, leaving Bob and Jan with a house that is just too big for them. They realised they needed something smaller and instead of moving like they used to – into something bigger, this time they were looking into something smaller.

What does the word mean?

Firstly, downsizing means ‘to reduce in size’.

If you google downsizing, you’ll get many negative words such as: Abate, de-escalate, decrease, dent, deplete, diminish, downscale, drop, dwindle, ease, knock down, lessen, lower, reduce.

To me, all of these words are very negative because buying a home that is smaller in scale isn’t negative at all.

These associations on google do not portray the lifestyle that Bob and Jan are now after. By downsizing, Bob and Jan are able to buy a home perfect in size for the two of them, enjoy their freedom by not spending most of their day by cleaning the dust off the numerous bedrooms that are not being used.

Downsizing improved their lifestyle. Bob started doing crafts and Jan spent more time in the company of friends.

Downsizing your home means different things to different people, but essentially, it means ‘moving for a gain’.

That might be, ease of living, more financial freedom, a better lifestyle, less gardening, more family time or even the ability to finally retire.

Are you mentally ready for a move?

Bob and Jan were of course a little sad to be leaving their family home of 10 – 15 years, but the amount of time and money they saved to start this new chapter of their life has made it all worth it. They are now able to retire in a home that is the perfect size for just the two of them.

Does this sound familiar? Do you think you should downsize and if so, are you able to let go?
